Summer Financial Aid Application
The 2024 Summer School Financial Aid Application (PDF) must be completed and signed to be considered for summer financial aid. The deadline to submit a 2024 Summer School Financial Aid Application is May 11, 2024 for Summer Session 1 & 11-week and June 20, 2024 for Summer Session 2.
The 2023-24 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must have been completed, including ECU’s Federal School Code (002923). If you have not done so, you may complete it at studentaid.gov. The deadline to complete a 2023-2024 FAFSA for summer financial aid is June 20, 2024.
Students who are only applying for a Parent PLUS Loan and/or Alternative loan must also complete the 2024 Summer School Financial Aid Application before the loan can be certified. Please allow thirty (30) processing days for private/alternative loans.

Study Abroad Aid
For students participating in a Summer Study Abroad experience, the 2024 Summer School Study Abroad Financial Aid Application (PDF) must be completed and signed to be considered for aid toward your study abroad experience. Aid will be able to be applied directly against all ECU-Faculty-led programs. If you are participating in an external program (ISEP, or a program hosted by another school, etc), there may be some limitations or other paperwork required – be sure to speak with Global Affairs to clarify.
Please note: If you will be taking additional hours beyond your study abroad program, you need only fill out the Abroad Aid application. You do not need to fill out both.
Summer Enrollment
Summer Financial Aid (grants, loans, scholarships) will be processed based on half time enrollment for undergraduate and graduate students. If you wish to be considered for Federal Work Study, you may request those funds while not enrolled in summer but preregistered for the fall term. Students do not have to preregistered for summer credits to apply for summer financial aid.
Undergraduate students must be enrolled in undergraduate courses and Graduate students must be enrolled in graduate courses to receive financial aid. Courses must count toward the student’s Program of Study. For more information, visit the Course Program of Study page and talk with your Academic Advisor.
Repeated coursework may not be eligible for financial aid. Courses you have previously taken and “passed” with a grade of “D” or better may not count towards the definition of half time for financial aid.
Students enrolled in thesis/dissertation courses (7000 or 9000) are considered full-time for financial aid purposes.
If you change your enrollment, you must notify the Financial Aid Office of those changes. Your aid may be reduced or cancelled.
If you fail to enroll in a minimum of six (6) semester hours as an undergraduate or five (5) semester hours as a graduate your financial aid will be cancelled. Any money that has been disbursed to your student account will be retracted and you may owe East Carolina University a balance.
Students planning to take courses at schools other than ECU in Summer 2024 must plan to pay for those courses out of pocket. Students must submit the Permission to Take Courses at a US University or College (PDF) from the Office of the Registrar, in addition to the 2024 Summer School Financial Aid Application. Students must be taking at least one summer course at ECU to be considered for financial aid through a consortium agreement.
Only students admitted to degree programs at ECU may receive aid. Visiting summer students are NOT eligible for aid at ECU and should inquire about financial aid options at their home institution.
Satisfactory Academic Progress
In order for financial aid to disburse, a student must either be considered “Making Satisfactory Academic Progress” or have a approved appeal on file. Follow the link for more information on the SAP Policy.
The Deadline to file a Summer SAP appeal (PDF), the deadline is: Wednesday, June 12, by 5pm.
Summer Awards
All students will be considered for federal loans unless you check to DECLINE on the Summer Financial Aid Application.
All awards will be automatically accepted. Students will be notified via ECU e-mail once awarded. Students may choose to decline an award by submitting a written request to the Office of Student Financial Aid.
Summer Aid Disbursement
Summer Financial Aid, excluding Federal Work Study, will be paid in ONE disbursement at the point the student meets half-time status.
Summer 1: 9-May-24 1st & 11-week Summer Session at half-time enrollment
Summer 2: 19-Jun-24 For 2nd Summer Session, or students reaching half-time (6hrs) for Summer
Summer Financial Aid will not be disbursed unless you are enrolled in at least six (6) undergraduate credit hours, not including repeated coursework, for undergraduate students and at least five (5) graduate credit hours, not including repeated coursework, for graduate students.
Refunds of excess financial aid will not be refunded until all summer charges are paid in full.
Summer 2024 Cost of Attendance
Summer Cost of Attendance is based on a student taking 6 hours (Undergraduate) or 5-6 hours (Graduate) combined across all summer sessions. Adjustments can be made for students whose total enrollment during summer is 9 or more hours.
